ST.LOUIS - A Summer Program for Students entering 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th Grade in Fall 2012. There are 10 slots to be filled on a first-come-first-served basis. Please contact northsideworkshop@gmail.com with questions and to register for the workshop.
This summer program consists of five workshops that address an alternative way to address urban vacancy through the development of an urban garden. Middle School Students with learn a basic introduction to beekeeping, gardening and printmaking.
This workshop in free to students living in North St. Louis. The workshops will occur on five consecutive Saturdays from 10am-2pm: June 9, June 16, June 23, June 30 & July 7. Northside Workshop will provide healthy lunches and snacks to all students participating.
June 9th - Introduction to Bees: Students will learn the benefits that bees bring to a garden and will have an opportunity to observe and create drawings of a living beehive from a safe environment. Juan William Chavez and Rick Cusamano will teach this workshop.
June 16th & June 23rd - Introduction to Gardening: Students will have the opportunity to learn about urban gardening through planting and harvesting plants from the garden. Using the garden as inspiration, students will be able to create drawings. Rick Cusamano and Juan William Chavez will teach these workshops.
June 30th - Printmaking Workshop: Using the garden and beekeeping as inspiration, students will create a drawing that illustrates the importance of urban gardening. This drawing will then be used to create posters using a printmaking process. Artist Kim Wardenberg will teach this workshop
July 7th Printmaking Workshop: In the second printmaking workshop, students will take the drawings that they created and apply it using a silk-screen process to create a poster. The posters and banners created during the workshops will be installed in the garden as public installation of art. Students will also be able to take home their own personal print. Artist Kim Wardenberg will teach this workshop
